Sounds like what I have experienced with my 1991 164S, only I will describe the noise as grinding rather than humming. No mechanic could fix it and it has come and gone over the years. I always believed that it came from the transmission. It is my theory that it is related to shot motor mounts. I would change the motor mounts, making sure that all three get changed. One of them is quite tricky.
