Pulling engine from 105 GT Chassis

I recently pulled the 1300 engine out of my 67 GT Junior. I followed the 105
factory manual instructions for removing the engine/transmission together.

I eventually realized (with advice from the digest) that the lever for the
clutch was in the way. I could not remove the lever, so I removed the entire
pedal box.

I managed to get the engine out, but found that the flywheel/ring gear did not
clear the center steering link (long steel tube), without some bending. Also, I
found that there was not enough side to side clearance, because the oil filter
canister hit the battery tray while the cold air box was up against the
firewall.

Am I doing something wrong? Should I remove the center steering link? oil
filter housing? cold air box? and carbs?

TIA,
