Re: Thread repair

Zamani,
I had the same thing happen on my 164 and used the Permatex kit to fix it. The repair has held up fine so far. I don't know how it would fare if you are removing and replacing the bolt fairly often, but for smaller lightly torqued applications like this it works wonderfully.

For those who haven't used it before, the Permatex thread repair kit consists of some two part epoxy (iirc) and a release agent. You mix up some of the epoxy and put it in the hole with the damaged threads, then you coat the bolt with the release agent and thread the bolt into the hole. The release agent is needed to prevent the epoxy from bonding to the bolt. After the epoxy has dried you can unscrew the bolt. When you thread the bolt into the hole some of the epoxy mixture will invariably get forced out. In some applications this will not matter, but for the cam covers or any other situation where a gasket will be effected this can be a problem. The solution is to let the epoxy start to set up and then use a sharp razor blade or knife to trim the epoxy flush with the sealing surface.

Subject: Thread repair

Hi All,

One of my cam cover bolt has a marginal thread hole. It gets tight, but
not tight enough. Is it ok, in this case, to go with the Permatex
thread repair mix? I would like to go with a heli coil fix, but 7mm X
1mm repair kit is not easy to find. Cheapest one I could find was about
$55+. I am inclined to spend the money on a tap and die set and go with
an 8mm bolt instead. Or use that permatex stuff...

Opinions?

Thanks.

Zamani
