Valve Adjustment

>> Running clearance is either by selective shimming (as the Alfa 4 cyl in
line
motors) or by hydraulic tappets/lifters which automatically take up any
slack, as commonly
used in American push rod engines<<

Or the system used by Alfa with the early Sud. This used a small adjuster
grub screw in the bucket follower. Each valve had 2 small cam lobes, one
running
each side of the adjuster. Through the middle of the cam there is a hole
between
each pair of lobes for a valve. To adjust the valve you lock the bucket in
place
with the cam in the correct position, and then put an allen key though the
hole in the cam to turn the adjuster on the bucket.

For normal use it worked quite well. Makes valve adjustments very easy.
Appently Alfa had problems with each cam lobe for a cylinder wearing at
a slightly different rate

All the best
