Re: 74 GTV starter problem

First there are two sets of wires attached to the starter solenoid. One is the wire from the battery/wire taking power to the rest of the car. The other is the trigger wire (the little wire with the spade connector) that energizes the solenoid.
Next time the starter keeps on cranking, pull that little wire off the solenoid.
If the cranking stops, there is something feeding power to that wire when it is not supposed to. Fix the problem or use the push button work-around.
If the cranking does not stop, the solenoid is faulty. Any good starter/alternator repair shop should be able to get you a solenoid. But, you might be money ahead to have them go ahead and rebuild the whole starter while you have it off.

Subject: 74 GTV starter problem

>Hey cats,
What is going on when the starter keeps cranking when the key is released? I may have asked this a year ago, but I don't remember if anyone answered, and if they did, what they said.
It used to happen once every 6 months, or so. Now it happens every few days. I have to disconnect the battery to stop it. I've become pretty quick with a wrench seeing as I'm getting tired of pulling out the battery and putting it on the charger.
If it's the starter, is it just the solenoid getting stuck? If so can it be repaired, or is replacement of the whole starter the only way?<
Thanks,
