One dumb question:  Have you removed the timing chain?
The rope in the cylinder trick:  Yes, remove the cams.  Turn the engine by
hand or by putting the transmission in 5th gear and rolling the car.  I would
not try the starter.  Since #'s 1 and 4 come up at the same time, try putting
rope in both.  Maybe even use the factory pullers in tandem with the rope.
Solvent:  I have had good results with "PB Blaster"
