I would say there's a 3rd choice, electric.  After buying a new car and
finding the state of
the art isn't appreciably better or satisfying to drive than a 15 YO
Verde I'm of the mind
that development and usefulness of the ICE reached diminishing returns a
while back.  When you
look at the whole picture an electric car is very cool.
