More Under-Reported Alfa Romeo Achievements

I was waiting for someone world-wide to post this story but no one seems to
have done so.

It is a continuing position of mine that a great preponderence of the
technical and design achievements properly credited to Alfa Romeo automobiles
over the last thirty years either gets under-reported here in North America or
eventually credited to some other factory. Before someone starts knocking off
elements of this design masterpiece, lets give the design studio and it's
client Alfa Romeo credit for an excellent achievement.

Italdesign's 2+2 Alfa Romeo Brera coupe is this year's Automotive News Concept
Car of the Year.

The fifth annual awards, announced last week, recognize the top concept styles
and vehicles unveiled at auto shows worldwide during the past year. A panel of
judges looked at innovation, production feasibility, production cost and
consumer value when selecting the finalists.

In accepting the award, Fabrizio Giugiaro, the styling director for Italdesign
Giugiaro S.p.A., said Alfa Romeo will build the car.

The judges said this year's competition was the closest ever with the Alfa
coupe just edging out General Motors' Hy-Wire - a driveable vehicle that
combines hydrogen fuel cell and by-wire technologies.

The third-place finisher was the Renault Ellypse.

But the Ellypse took first in the Interior Concept category, followed by the
Bertone SKF Novanta and Citroen C-Airdream.

Italdesign's Brera also took top honors for the Best Exterior Concept. In
second place was the Cadillac Cien. Third place went to the Citroen
C-Airdream.

The Hy-Wire was the winner in the Environmental Concept category, followed by
the Bertone SKF Novanta and Opel Concept M.

The Automotive News Concept Car of the Year awards were announced at sister
publication AutoWeek's Design Forum. The editorial staff at

AutoWeek chose the following vehicles as winners of the AutoWeek Editors'
Choice Awards, as selected from the 2003 Detroit auto show:

Most Fun, Aston Martin V8 Vantage; Best Concept, Ford 427; Most Significant,
Mustang GT; and Best in Show, the Cadillac Sixteen.
