the gap between the pistons and liner wall will be
larger for a cold engine - i'd bet that's where the
biggest variability would come from.

(order of magnitude estimate):
for a 2.3 in radius piston of Al w/ thermal expansion
coefficient of 14e-6 (inches per inch per degree F
about 200F) and piston running about 200F above room
temp - the radius expands by .006 inches.
