I may be involved in moving a sofa with a Mazda Miata tomorrow, and I
was wondering if the Spider owners on the list have any wisdom to
share.

Thanks,
Joe

Sure, no problem at all - just get a friend with an Alfetta GT to help out.
Back when my '81 Spider was my daily driver, I moved across town with it - a lot of trips with boxes in the trunk, in the passenger seat, etc. The only thing I couldn't figure out how to move was my bed. So, Don Happel and I loaded it onto the roof of his Alfetta GT, mattress side down, legs sticking in the air. Of course, we couldn't tie it down, because the rope would've had to pass through the open windows, which would tie the doors shut. So, we ended up working out a system where I reached out the passenger side window and held the bed down with my right arm, Don reached out and held it down with his left arm. This left Don with his right hand to steer, and my left hand to shift. We didn't turn any best times, but after getting coordinated, the trip was made without incident.
That was, of course, the original plan, me being the friend with the Alfetta GT[V-6]. But my car is in the garage back home in Ohio, saving itself from the nastiest weather of the year. Although I must say I'd just tie the thing down and crawl in the windows, like I did when we used the GTV-6 to take my grandparents' canoe to the lake a couple of years ago (my grandparents got in via the doors, then my aunt and I secured the canoe and climbed in the windows).
