Oil capacity

I just bought this '85 Graduate and the engine shows obvious signs of
not being the original. Among other things, there is a deep dimple in
the left side valve cover where the air hose to the airflow meter
crosses over but the dimple is not centerred under the hose (perhaps a
different valve cover?). My question is how many quarts of oil are
needed to fill the crankcase assuming I also change the oil filter?
Also, a Fram PH8A fits nicely in place of the short oil filter that was
there and extends slightly beyond the crankcase to allow use of a
standard filter wrench from beneath.
One last question: there seems to be a sensor connecting the upper and
lower speedometer cables located just behind the air filter box. What is
the purpose of this sensor as there is no cruise control on this car?
