Why we disconnect the negative battery clamp is because it is, as Brian 
said, safer to prevent a dead short to ground if you work on the 
positive clamp.   I have seen the positive cable clamp accidentally  
fall back on the +post to close the circuit again.  The Neg. cable is 
shorter and can hang free.  But either disconnect is ok if you are 
careful.  Fred
