It's *not* normal practice to have to cut the cable to make it fit.  In
fact, it's more common to have to 'stretch' the cable a little bit to
make it engage on both ends.

Are you sure the other end of the cable is properly inserted into the
gauge?  I.e., you might try rotating the cable a little bit to make sure
it's all the way into the gauge.
