Yesterday, I started hearing odd sounds from the manual transmission in
my 1991 164L.

A possible reason:
"The durability of the standard transmissions of the modles till 1993 suffers from bearings with plastic bearing cages. These wear out faster-than-average. In the majority of cases one can hear a whining noise in the first three gears. First one can hear it only when the car is overrunning the engine, when the problem advances one can hear it also under power."
