Retrieving diag codes from '94 164Q

A friend of mine borrowed my car and as a favor, detailed the engine.
Unfortunately some moisture got into some places it shouldn't, and while
the car is running fine (initially it was missing, and he cleaned some
connections), the Check Engine light is on.

I've got the car back now, and I can't figure out how to retrieve the
code, or just reset it. I suspect the voltage drop from the stumbling
that happened before triggered a "bad ECU" code, which happened to me
once before, about a year ago. At that point I unplugged the battery
overnight and the light reset, and never came back.

This time around, I unplugged the battery overnight and the code is
still there. Interestingly, the car also "remembered" the suspension was
in Sport mode, and the temperature setting for HVAC. Maybe I didn't
leave it unplugged long enough?

Last time around I was able to retrieve the code somehow - doesn't seem
to work this time. I don't know what I'm doing wrong - you turn the key
till the dash lights up and the "dinging" sound starts, then taps the
gas pedal five times, right?

Can anyone tell me how to reset the code? (the car is running fine, I'm
convinced nothing is really wrong)

Thanks

-Glenn
