I haven't seen this listed among methods yet so I'll throw it in.  I like the 
aluminum shims with a sticky backing.  You stick them to the back of the 
brake pad and the slide them right in place.  I started using them after I 
noticed that all my Mercedes pads came with them and never squealed once.  
However, a few after market pads I bought for some of my Mercedes didn't have 
them and squealed pretty badly.  So now I use them in all my cars and no 
squeaks.  I know NAPA and DAP carry the shims for around $.50 to $1.00 a 
piece.
