stupid question perhaps?

Dear Alfisti,

I have what amounts to a possible stupid question, perhaps it's a confusion
over terminology, or perhaps general stupidity, but here it is. I'm looking
at a new '87 Milano/75. The first time I looked it over all appeared well
including the test drive. Now I go back another time and the car won't
start, so the owner has it towed to 'his mechanic' and gives me a call after
it's been looked over, and he says "It's the ignition advance unit, and it's
going to cost $1400 US" He says he jumped it and crossed the neg and pos and
somehow damaged the "Advance unit". ??? Is there a magical unit in the dizzy
that costs 1400 US, or is he talking about the ECU? The car is super except
for this 'problem' so if it's something I can just buy and take care of,
that's great. I'm thinking he's talking about the ECU and if that's the
consensus of the list, where can I source either a new one, or better a used
but working one? Is another name for the ECU indeed the "advance Unit"? When
I hear ignition advance, I think of weights in the dizzy or a vacuum
apparatus.

Oh and if anyone knows of a good Milano/75 for sale in the SE US let me know
:)

Thank you in advance,
Graham in Palm Harbor
