Non-running Alfettas
I ask that all of you not listen to what Ron Horowitz had to say
regarding Alfettas in #49. True, much of what he said was pretty
accurate, but still...
However do listen to Fred (and at the very least) "GIVE THEM A DECENT
BURIAL!"
I have to agree that few parts, perhaps none, will ever be valuable from
an Alfetta. Yet there is a pretty dedicated following for the cars and
we do need a source of spare parts. When was the last time you saw a
non-rusted out rear hatch on an early Alfetta GT?
I also agree, with very few exceptions, 'investing' in a car - any car
- is pretty absurd. Still (at least in my case) one does need
transportation. Why not drive something one enjoys and is (for the most
part) pretty inexpensive to keep running?
I don't get to drive all that many different cars. Generally when I do
it is one I've restored and just before I turn it over to the client.
One could buy a whole bunch of really good Alfetta GT's for what the
final tally of the 101 Spider Veloce I'm restoring will be. I really
enjoy driving the car and would love to have it myself. As soon as I
quit talking here I'll be driving to the paint shop to buy some Imron
(sp?) to hopefully stem the paint from peeling off the Girling metal
brake fluid canister. It will be the third time I've painted it.
It is only one of many small details which tends to make the 101 more
than a bit fussy.
Yes, the original 'merican bumpers on the GT were / are butt ugly, the
smog equipment is (in my case, was) pretty unsophisticated, it really
does make a darn decent daily driver. Point being, for the most part,
the cars can hold their own well in traffic and general all around use.
Some even make their living (avoid the trash bin) keeping their
'clients' happy on a race track.
Even though the last time I said this on the Digest was quite sure I
heard hundreds of bodily orifices snapping shut - I still feel the
Alfetta GT is Much prettier and Much More of a 'usable' car than any of
the GTV's.
