Timing light
Yes, I meant the original mark on my '75 Alfetta GT for the static
timing is 5 - 7 degrees ATDC and my missing mark (which I will add today
using a line of White-Out) should now be 6 - 8 degrees BTDC (since I've
gone Euro).
And I should have also known that modifying the advance springs won't
help the upper limit as Dean Cains pointed out.
The consensus is to adjust the distributor so that max advance 'peaks'
on M and not worry about the static timing. Therefore my comment
regarding the advance mechanism sucks might well be incorrect. I will
take this advice and if all goes well, should leave well enough alone,
however...
(Looking at Ricambi's distributor advance curves) why are there two
lines on each chart? Also, I notice the distributor with the greatest
maximum advance is for a series of Bosch models and it is 20 degrees.
The upper limit for the MarelliPlex is (only?) 14 degrees, the lower
line is 12 degrees.
Also, the chart shows the MarelliPlex peaking out at 2,500 rpm. So why
rev it all the way to 5,000?
Charlie Slayman points out the distributor I have might be tailored for
a different application. All I know is the fellow I got it from removed
it from 'something' at a Pick-A-Part. Where is the model number located?
I was under the impression the air gap for the MarelliPlex is .018".
Ricambi's book says .010" to .016". That's a pretty big difference or is
an air gap not all that critical?
Thanks again to everyone who offered outstanding advice regarding the
'how to' regarding use of my new timing light and comments regarding the
MarelliPlex.
