Dan, I'm not sure if the filter set up adds power.  But I was just re-reading 
Wes Ingrams Spica manual last night.  He states " I shudder to think about 
all the Spica air boxes that have been scrapped in favor of less efficient 
aftermarket air cleaners only to discover that it is one of the best designs 
ever to appear on a production automobile."
