Re: Importing non-us models, reply from congress woman

And in Red China, you can say and do anything you like as long as it doesn't break any laws. Unfortunately, almost anything one says or does in Red China breaks laws. That's repressive. So, the US automobile safety standards are different how? Remember, this is like a helmet law (sort of) in that noncompliance hurts no-one but the car's owner. In fact, its not nearly so serious as not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle because European cars have safety standards every bit a stringent as ours. They're just a little different, that's all. But bureaucrats being what they are, these differences make all the difference, and they don't see that the laws are mostly arbitrary. Since Modern Alfas will pass CA emissions and since they all come with front and side air-bags and side impact protection as well as energy absorbing bumpers front and rear, I don't see the problem. If I were rich, I believe that I would go to Italy, buy myself a new Alfa spider and bring it back and then drive it on the road without the Government's blessing and DARE them to prosecute me for it. I'd raise such a stink that people would seriously have to think about changing some laws. But I'm not rich, so I just have meekly accept living behind the Automotive Iron Curtain.

Only it doesn't. You're quite free to own any car you want, so long as you meet the appropriate safety and emissions regulations. The only thing that is limiting you is your desire and (presumably financial) ability to undertake to meet those regulations.

One wonders what this ultra-liberal Democrat Congresswoman would say if
someone pointed out that this law is VERY repressive. I.E. It limits my
freedom to own the car I want therefore it opresses me.
