You can remove the half shaft without removing the wheels, however in my
experience it is a *much* easier job to r&r the half shaft with the
wheel off.  That way you can do it from beside the car, rather than from
underneath the car, looking up.

Sometimes the bolts can be a real bear to remove.  I'd spray them with a
liberal dose of Liquid Wrench a day or two before you try to tackle this
job.  And then be prepared to have to grind the heads off one or more of
the bolts if you live in the rust belt.  Spares will come in handy.
