I would start looking at the gas tank.  If I read your post correctly, you
get the smell when the tank is full?  If so, check to see if the fuel level
sending unit is leaking where it seals against the top of the tank in the
trunk.  As the fuel level goes down, it doesn't get past this seal and the
smell isn't pronounced.
