Steve,

There is another product available called goo gone which is an oily, orange
based cleaner. 
It can usually be found by the checkout counters at Walmart, K Mart, Home
Depot, etc.
It's very effective on "gooey" (hence the name) or soft adhesives.
I haven't noticed it to be particularly harmful to paint.
I would of course test it in an inconspicuous area  before slathering it on
my car.
