Camshaft Vent Question

Hi there,
I'm changing the filtration system on a '69 Alfa with a 2-litre Weber setup,
and was wondering about the camshaft cover hose that led into the original air
plenum. Is it necessary to route this through the new air filter? Was that
design intended to reduce emissions, or does it serve a valuable purpose? Can
I get rid of this line entirely? There's also a second hose connected to the
plenum from somewhere under both carbs. What is its purpose?
