GTV6, Milano, Alfetta Driveshaft Vibration
In #974 Rich Hirsch states:
"So, I can only conclude that these extra nuts were added at the factory
to
help balance the driveshaft.
"As to whether or not the extra nuts help balance the driveshaft in it's
current state, I'm still testing."
******
Can't argue with an original car owner but all the Alfetta driveshafts
definitely have small metal plates spot welded on their circumference -
obviously for balance purposes.
It would amaze me the factory would use extra nuts for balancing,
assuming any 'aftermarket' replacements would be done Exactly as the
factory had done. This would of course mean the mechanic also marks and
keys the studs / holes to whatever was removed at that particular
'station' / location. Not terribly practical, but then...
When I get off my duff and also become rich beyond my wildest dreams,
plan on rebuilding the 'spare' '79 Alfetta block and installing the
'spare' '79 driveshaft since it's beefier and especially because (for
the moment) one can still purchase rubber driveshaft supports for the
later vintage.
While one needs to find an Alfetta friendly driveshaft rebuilder (I know
of one) who has machined special adapters for this god-awful driveshaft,
will also (since I'll be rich beyond my wildest dreams) have it balanced
before installing. Whilst lighting my Cuban cigars with one hundred
dollar bills, there'll be no extra nuts or hose clamps for me - as I get
into my '75 Alfetta GT daily driver.
Just my $45 per hour opinion,

It is absolutely obscene to get 105,000 miles from those three rubber
donuts which barely hold the driveshaft together on these cars. If all
of you don't replace them every 30 to 40K like I must, 'they'll' quit
producing them thinking, "Who needs them?"
And I'm such a smoooooth driver.
