Blown Head Gasket - 2000 Berlina Motor

Hi,
Can anybody help as to the best way to check whether a head gasket on a 2000
motor is actually blown. About 5 to 6 years ago I tried to sell the car. It
had been standing for a long time & I got it running (it ran like a pig) &
drove it 120Km to deliver it, but the sale fell through. Prior to this I
drove the car about 1400 Km when I fetched it from another town & it ran
faultlessly. A 2nd buyer looked at the car, but said the head gasket was
blown & then offered to buy the engine as he wanted to build a spare motor
for his race car. I declined the offer, fetched the car & have stored it
ever since. I have subsequently started working on the car & I am suspicious
as to whether the head gasket is actually blown. The engine has never been
overheated.

I would like to be sure that the head gasket is blown before I take of the
head.

Thanks
