RE: Subject: tie rod pulling

A variation on Skip's method is to get two BFHs and hit the tie rod arm
on either side simultaneously. The tapered shaft should pop right out.
The theory is that when you squeeze the tie rod inward the harder tapered
rod has to go somewhere.

Here's a little trick I learned many years ago to remove tie rod ends
and ball joints without destroying the rubber seal:
       1. Loosen/remove the nut on the end of the Morse Taper shaft. (The
part of the ball joint that is attaching it to the control arm/spindle).
       2. Using a pry bar or whatever (another technical term), put some
down pressure on the tie rod/control arm.
       3. Liberally apply the force from one BFH to the part of the control
arm/spindle that the Morse Taper is passing thru. Something like rapping
your kid's nuckles to get them to drop what they have in their hands.
       4. When the applied force is great enough, the resultant vibration
causes the Morse Taper to release and the joint comes apart.
