Jon, do you have a set of feeler gauges?  Wedge the biggest feeler that will
fit under the nut, then turn it gently with your wrench.  If you can wedge it
up enough it should catch a good thread and start to spin off.  These little
studs are easy to strip, since the temptation is strong to over-tighten in an
attempt to avoid leakage.  Best bet is always use a new gasket, make sure the
mating surface on the pump and the cover are completely clean, and use a thin
coat of gasket sealant (not RTV!  Gasket sealant!) on the cover side.
