Changing carb rubbers/carb support rod

I want to replace the carb rubber mounts on my 1750 GTV as they are split and appear to be leaking. I have a couple of questions for the digest.

First, does anyone have any tips on the best way to go about this, in particular whether it is better to remove the carbs from the rubbers before removing from the car or the other way round. There doesn't seem to be a lot of access to some of the bolts that need to be removed to do this job and I am neither as slender nor as flexible as I used to be.

I have also seen reference to a carb support rod. My car doesn't have one and I think this probably contributed to the deterioration of the rubbers. Is a support rod a standard Alfa part which is missing from my car and I might be able to get from a wreckers, or is it an aftermarket device. Even better does anyone in Australia have one to sell?.

Thanks for the help
