slingers

Thanks to all who helped with my crank-plug question. 

There are two "slingers" that appear in Alfa parts references that I know of. 
One is in front of the timing chain lower sprocket and the other is adjacent 
to the driveshaft center support bearing. Please, gentle Alfisti, what is a 
"slinger" and what does it perform?
