freon alternative

The reason this mixture was outlawed is because if you have a leak you have
a very big bomb under the hood of a hot engine. Also, any time you use this
or other types of mixtures to charge a A/C system you need to charge it
liquid phase so as not to separate the mixture as the component have
different boiling points and you will changing the mixture as you charge the
system.

No. Well at least not in the US where it's a big no-no to use it in
automobiles... although that hasn't stopped some enterprising
individuals from doing so. If one were to DIY, you'd need a proper
vessel (evacuated propane tank) a source of iso-butane (sold in cans for
use in camping stoves) and a good source of propane (torch bottles would
be a good idea... more likely to be pure than stuff for your gas grill.)
You then mix it by weight, and use that to charge your system, just
as you would with R-12.

Again this is purely hypothetical. It's a super bad idea if you don't
know what you are doing, and even if you do it's still a really bad idea.

It is a shame however that such an evironmentally benign and cheap
solution was legislated out of existence.
