i doubt it, but there are other R-12 substitutes that are approved. for a
while, Jiffy Lube was supplying an R-12 substitute named Frigic, and there
were others...

the Dupont story is not entirely "out there"; i remember the period of time
rather well. the committee of the SAE that was responsible for HVAC
standards was under the thumb of the aftermarket HVAC outfits; apparently,
they felt that the biggest killing was to be made by selling complete
R-134a replacement kits, rather than selling a simpler R-12 substitute.
they made a big deal out of the (actually rather small) fire hazard of the
propane/iso-butane mix, which was the other leading contender.
