Spin on oil filters
In addition to overtightening the filter (tight means no leaks right? or
are they afraid the thing will vibrate loose!) I doubt those jiffy lube
guys bother to rub a thin film of oil on the filter seal before putting it
on. I suspect many a time the dry rubber just sticks to the filter housing
mounting face.
Caution is advised if you decide to flat spot the case or even drive a
screwdriver through in order to increase the leverage. Try everything
before you start destroying the filter. It is possible to rip the metal
case right off the base of the filter leaving you with an even bigger
problem. Don't ask how I know this, but you can be assured that a 21 inch
pipe wrench will fit on the base of the filter for a 1975 Volvo 245. For
Alfa's the clearance is likely to be very tight.
