I just installed AC into my 71 Spider and what the others are saying about 
upgrading to R134a is basically correct.  I purchased a complete system 
from an 81 Spider and converted it over to the new gas simply because I 
didn't feel like paying a minimum of $300 to get the system charged when I 
could do it for under $30 with the kit from WalMart.  As for the 
efficiency, my outlet temperature goes from 38 deg when it's 70 outside to 
about 50 degrees when the temperature approaches the upper 90's.  The 
overall temperature in my Spider is comfortable at the higher temperatures 
as long as you have the AC outlets pointed at you.
