Very likely it is your cat converter.  My Toyota Cressida had that happen at 
about 60K miles when the O2 sensor went out, the car ran so rich that it 
totally clogged the converter and the car would hardly move out of its own 
way.  A muffler shop could probably fit a generic catalytic converter for 
lots less than the Alfa equivalent.
