My uncle had one for his mid-80s MB 450SL that looked exactly like what you 
describe. Knowing him, it was probably a dealer purchased item (he was a 
pureblood checkbook mechanic). I wouldn't be certain it was an MB factory 
item, however.

I'd suggest checking with some of the non-Alfa high end sports car 
dealerships to see what types of things they have to offer for their 
removable hardtops. There may be something out there that would do the trick 
for your Alfa. And, with a little investigation, you might be able to find it 
from the manufacturer rather through the car dealer network.
