I've used the grease in the hole with a socket wrench as the punch method.
Took a few repackings before it came all the way out.  Very messy but it
eventually worked.  The hole in the socket was filled with a 3" extension
which I then hit with a hammer to generate enough pressure to push the pilot
bearing out.  I think you do need a pretty close fit between the "punch" and
the bearing.

Last time I was at AutoZone I noticed a pilot bearing puller in their list
of 'free' loaner tools.  If you have one nearby it might be worth a try.
