R&R rear axle

I guess I am facing the unavoidable swap of my 72
gtv's loud and leaky differential/rear axle (I don't
know why the Alfa Bible claims that rear ends are
bulletproof... This is the second 4cyl car I own with
a noisy one!).  Can anybody who has tackled the
project recently tell me if there's any gotchas or
tricks to get this done faster.  Do I need to remove
the shocks/springs?  Any tips on how to _safely_
remove the springs (in case I need to do the trailing
arm bushings along the way)?
