RE-AR-625---164 Seats

The front seats in the 164 were a constant problem. The problem
generally occurs when the seat is moved to the end of its travel, ussually to
the rear. When at the end of travel and some one has sat in the seat, the
gearing gets bound up. The Bosch motors do not have sufficient torque to over
come the jambed seat gearing. Alfa put in Blue boxes that when plugged into
the seat motor harness would reverse the motors slightly when the seat switch
was released, thus not allowing the gearing to jam.The Blue electronic boxes
were slide into the front portion of the seat cushion. If you have the blue
box installed it could be bad.If it is remove it and reconnect the wires to
original. Replacing the motors well not help ,replacing the seat gearing well
not help, there is no updated parts. The best tool for the job is a hammer.
Tap the motor slightly while operating the seat switch in the direction
needed, when seat moves run it forwards and backwards thru the full travel.
Then always make sure you do not allow seat to sit at the end of its travel.
Also when a seat sits at the same position for long period of time they can
also stick. The hammer technic was the factory approved method so keep it
handy.Since 1981 I have worked at the Alfa Romeo dealer Knauz in Lake
Forest,Ill.
