They recommend connecting these devices on the negative side for the same
reason you always disconnect or interrupt the negative lead first and
install it last (during battery removal/installation, jump starting, etc).

It's a basic safety thing - if the negative lead is connected and you're
wrenching around on the positive side, and your wrench touches ground,
you'll get sparks, or worse.
