starter/alternator



To make an alternator work as a motor, you have to drive it with an AC
voltage. You would need a complex and expensive piece of electronics for that.
Also, AC motors produce low torque at low rpm. In contrast, DC motors make
lots of torque at low rpm.  That's what a starter motor needs to do.

I like to tell friends that the only electronic devices in my Alfas are the
radios. I'm happy with that.
