alt/starter

    Question for the collective wisdom:  why don't automakers use a combined
starter/alt as do some bikes to save a little weight, etc?  Idea doesn't
work with larger engines needing more torque from the starter, more amps
from the alt?  Any racers do this?  At least one curious mind wants to know!
