re: filling rear axle (was filling transmission)

<For the rear axle, I drilled a hole in the trunk floor. I run some
<fuel line hose through the hole and into the filler plug of the rear axle
<underneath. Pour oil into a funnel stuck into the top end of the hose
until
<it starts to run out the filler hole.

Egads! Why drill a hole in the trunk? First of all, if you remove the spare
there are two huge paint drain holes with rubber plugs in them but even that
is unnecessary. All you need is about 4 or 5 feet of that clear plastic
tubing (1/4 inch?) that's it. The gear oil bottles have that tapered spout
and if you cut it off at just the right point and feed the plastic tubing in
from the back side it makes a perfect seal. Then you just stick the end of
the tubing into the filler hole and place the bottle anywhere above the
level of the filler and cut a hole in the bottom. Go have a beer or watch
the news, come back in half an hour and hook up the second bottle.

No fuss, no mess, no lying on the floor doing isometric wrist exercises.
