Transmission Oil

In V8 #535, Rob Murphy asks, "Tom, isn't Spirax hard to come by? Any
recommendations on where to find it?
And, how much does it cost?"

********

Not trying to butt in here, but...Tom Sahines has been a fountain (along
with others) of information on both the restoration of Joe / Jim Hart's
101 Spider Veloce and the swapping around of transaxles, etc. on my own
'75 Alfetta GT.

When the subject of gear / transmission oil came up for both of these
cars, Tom said to go with Shell's Spirax 80W 90 oil in both
transmissions and Spider's diff. He did ask if the sychhros and sliders
had been changed to later ones on Joe's 4-speed and I said they had
been. Tom's simple logic was, "This is the gear oil these cars were
designed for."

I let my fingers do the walking on the internet and went to (I believe)
www.Shell.com to find distributors (as opposed to stations) and then to
Calif., then scrolled down and found Baldwin Park. Called, "Yeah, we got
it." In my case they were about two miles away, drove over and paid
$42.25 (including sales tax).

They have a very nice pump (about $45) for the 5 gallon (smallest
container available) plastic container which I regret not buying.

So if you luck out...

If you're in this area, their name is J.H. Mitchell & Sons / 14515
Joanbridge St. / Baldwin Park 91706 / 626-962-2451

Biba
Irwindale, CA USA

They also carry a 250W gear oil (minimum 5 gallons) should you (and a
bunch of friends) want to consider it for leaky steering box's.
