That does not sound right, even after allowing for the fact that your
engines all have to run upside down on the bottom of the earth. The keyway
is on the bottom with number one (or four) cylinder at the top. That is,
with the P mark aligned with the pointer at about 1:30 and the key will be at
6 o'clock.
The crankshaft is flat. The keyway aligns with the crankpins for
cylinders 2 and 3.
You could find TDC by pulling number one spark plug. Turn the engine
until you can see with a flashlight that the piston is up. It does not
matter if it is up on compression stroke or exhaust stroke. Put a pencil
down the spark plug hole and rock the engine back and forth until the pencil
is at its highest point. You could get more precise with a dial indicator,
but you will be close.
When you have done that, figure out where your P mark is relative to
the pointer.
By the way, I do not recall any 2000 Alfa harmonic balancer /
crankshaft pulley having a rubber insert. Chevy V-8 engines have rubber
inserts, but no Alfa in my experience. Of course, my experience is with USA
versions. I have no idea what you got in New Zealand.
