Re: CV Joint Replacement on '77 Alfetta GT

Tom,
I can't tell you where to find new cv joints, but I can answer some of your
other questions...

>2. Where do I find info on how to remove and re-install the inner joints? I
>need to get them off to clean and repack the joints and replace the boots.

To replace the inner boots you first have to remove the 6 (6mm?) allen-head
bolts which secure the cv-joint to the flange attached to the brake rotor.
Next you have to remove the cv-joint from the axle shaft. To do this you
must pry the metal cover off the rotor-side of the joint, then slide the
joint down the shaft (towards the wheel) thus exposing the circlip on the
end of the axle shaft. Once this is removed you can slide the cv joint off
the axle shaft and install the new boot, etc. Cut off the metal bands that
held the old boot in place and slide the new boot into place. Secure it with
the special metal bands using the tool from IAP or others (the tool works
great, btw). I didn't like the bands I got from IAP in the past (can't
recall the brand) they looped around the axle twice and tended to bind when
I tried to tighten them. Breeze makes some nice ones if you can find a
supplier. The bands are great for other things too. I recently used one to
secure the passanger side inboard end of the steering rack boot on my 164 in
place of the rediculous thing that was originally used... but I digress.
Reassembly is, as they say in the manuals, the reverse of removal. I
haven't disassembled the outboard cv joint, but I would assume it is
essentially the same.

I don't think you can use gtv6/milano cv-joints without swaping several
other parts (cv-joints, axle shafts, rotor-to-cv-joint spacer flanges and
possibly rear hubs). GTV6/Milano axles are thicker and therefor are unlikely
to work with alfetta cv joints and vice-versa. Also, I believe milano axles
are longer (the spacer flange between the rotor and cv joint is noticably
thinner). The bolts used to attach the cv-joints to the spacer flange are
larger on gtv6/milanos, but I believe the bolts which attach the flange to
the rotor are the same size. I'm not sure about the outboard end. Anyone
know if gtv6/milano outter cv-joint will attach to the alfetta hub?

P.S.- Now is a good time to do those rear brakes if they need it.
