Advice sought
I'm working on my 84 Spider. Finally resolved issue with transmission
jumping out of reverse, thanks to help from Tom Sahines. Turned out this
transmission had been worked on by/for a PO and during re assembly the
interlock rollers were not inserted. You could put the transmission in
first gear and then push the 5/R control rod into reverse - two gears
engaged concurrently, not good. Local mechanic had two transmissions
torn down in his share parts area, but only find one of these rollers.
IAP put me on to a resource in California (Foreign Auto Menders) who is
sending me more.
While the transmission was out decided it was a good time to replace the
motor mounts, both had come loose from their body side plates. The
engine had shifted far enough to the driver's side the lower bolt on the
passenger's body side of that mount could not be accessed. Decided to
pull the engine to give the needed clearance as the body side plates
would remain, and this would give me a chance to attack a few other
issues. Removed engine without much difficulty. The mounts are held to
the body side with one bolt (high side) and one nut on a stud (low side).
The stud on the passengers side snapped as I attempted to remove that
nut. I'll need to drill and tap that location.
Any one know the specs for this stud? What are the specs of the body
side, 8mm x 1.0? I would try to remove the drivers side to inspect but
fear damage to it.
Reading the discussions here regarding removal of the fan and
installation of an electric pusher fan, I got an idea and wanted the
groups comments. I've decided to remove the A/C from this car (who needs
A/C in an open car in central Ohio?). Thought about removing the
condenser, taking the pusher fan from that unit and fabricating brackets
to use it. I'll need to figure out how to wire it so it will operate
automatically as I would not want to rely on myself to operate in
manually.
Would this fan provide adequate flow needed to cool the engine during hot
summer city traffic use? Should a shroud be installed in front of the
radiator? As the original shroud will not be needed on the engine side,
could it be sufficiently modified to support this pusher fan. Not sure
there is enough clearance in front of the radiator for this shroud. This
type of exposure would be minimal, but would want a set up that could
handle the challenge.
