70's Engine power

The most powerful 2 litre engine sold in North America in 1977 and 1978 was
in a SAAB 99. Their 1,985 cc normally aspirated four cylinder developed 118
hp, more than Alfa, more than BMW, more than anyone. Bosch K Jetronic CIS
fuel injection with Lambda Sond, oversquare engine (90 x 78) and a Heron
Head crossflow design were basically state of the art for the time. Now
this was in the Canadian Market and I know California SAABs were strangled
down to 110, but the others were even more strangled. Now I dunno if this
was DIN SAE or whatever, but it was the figure used consistently by US auto
magazines to compare outputs across the board. There was no way the Alfa
four with it's long stroke, hemi head and Spica could make this kind of
power AND meet emissions.
