Timing belt tensioner sans hydraulix, mechanix

Ave!

I am reassembling my engine starting tomorrow and will use a set up with my
timing belt that keeps it at a constant tension, at 1/4" deflection halfway
between the cams, with cold engine. What is the drawback with this, except
shorter service intervals?? Apparently this is what most people use on their
gtv6 and Milano v6s when they race them seriously. Why does Alfa think the
tension has to be variable? Better: Why they think that the tension needs to
be compensated with rabbit-out-of-the-hat mechanical and hydraulic
tensioners?? Or did think, anyway??
I have had problems in the past because my oil drive pulley bolt was not
tightened, wobbled, and resulted in bent valves, broken mechanical
tensioners, yadayada, three consecutive times. For whatever reason, I don't
trust the mechanical tensioners and would rather opt for shorter service
intervals.

Need input. Grazie.
